A meeting was held between Minister of Energy Parviz Shahbazov and Fergus Auld, the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to our country.
The Ministry told AZERTAC that representatives of the Green Energy Corridor Company (GECO) and the UK-based company Xlinks also attended the meeting.
Issues related to the development of energy cooperation between Azerbaijan and the United Kingdom were discussed. The sides exchanged views on expanding long-term energy partnership in the direction of green energy, the “Caspian–Black Sea–Europe Green Energy Corridor” project, and the implementation of innovations.
A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Green Energy Corridor (GECO) energy company and Xlinks during the meeting. The document covers issues such as exploring opportunities for cooperation between the two companies in submarine cable projects and related infrastructure, information exchange, and carrying out technical assessments. The memorandum does not create any legal obligations, and GECO is currently holding negotiations with potential partners for the period following the completion of the feasibility study stage of the Green Energy Corridor project.
It should be noted that GECO is a joint venture of four countries established to implement the “Agreement on the Development and Transmission of Green Energy between Azerbaijan, Georgia, Romania, and Hungary.” Xlinks is a UK-based company specializing in large-scale renewable energy projects and the construction of long-distance power transmission lines. The company’s technical team has experience in building the 720-kilometer, 1.4-gigawatt North Sea Link interconnector between the United Kingdom and Norway, as well as the 765-kilometer, 1.4-gigawatt Viking Link interconnector between the United Kingdom and Denmark.
