Next Caspian summit to be held in Tehran

Russia views positively Iran’s proposal to hold the 7th Caspian States Summit in Tehran on August 12, 2026, the International Caspian Sea Day.

This was stated by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov at a press conference following talks with Kazakh Foreign Minister Yermek Kosherbayev.

“We consider Iran’s proposal to hold the seventh Caspian Summit in Tehran on August 12, 2026, positively. This date is Caspian Sea Day,” he said.

According to Lavrov, he and Kosherbayev noted during the talks the growing need for joint work in the Caspian region. “We agreed that the five Caspian littoral states have exclusive competence in addressing issues concerning the Caspian Sea and bear responsibility for sustainable development in the region, as well as for ensuring peace and security there, as enshrined in the Convention on the Legal Status of the Caspian Sea,” the Russian foreign minister said.

On August 12, 2018, in Aktau, Kazakhstan, during the Fifth Caspian Summit, the Presidents of the five littoral states — Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Turkmenistan — signed the Convention on the Legal Status of the Caspian Sea, after negotiations that lasted nearly 50 years.
