Hungary has become a leader in solar energy. According to a recent report by the research institute Ember Energy, solar panels accounted for nearly a quarter of the country’s electricity production last year — a huge jump from just 4% in 2019. Meanwhile, coal’s share fell from 12% to 6%, and gas declined from 25% to 19% between 2019 and 2024.
Analysis shows that solar energy production in Central Europe — specifically in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia — has increased sixfold compared to 2019, double the EU average. The region, historically dominated by coal, has now become a European hub for solar energy and a growing center for battery production.
