The Hungary-based Ganz Transformers and Electric Rotating Machines Ltd. was established in 2020, continuing the legacy of the company founded by Ábrahám Ganz in 1844 in Budapest, which boasted several world-first inventions introduced in the late 19th century, including the first high-efficiency, closed-core shunt connection transformer launched in 1884.
As a result of the reorganisation in 2020, Ganz became a Hungarian-owned company again and begun continuous product development and modernisation of its manufacturing facilities to deliver the highest quality to its customers in the most efficient way. The company today manufactures customised high-voltage electrical equipment, including power transformers, rotating machines, motors, and generators, and provides related services to its customers.
In recent years, Ganz has taken on the challenge of meeting the new market needs of the transformer and rotating machine markets with new impetus and continuous development of its manufacturing technology and products.
Tradition and innovation in one place
Over the past four years, Ganz has achieved several breakthroughs, not only having restored the reputation of its historic brand, but also strengthening its market position both in Hungary and internationally. In the next phase of its development, the company is positioning itself as a pioneer of digital solutions and aims to become not only a manufacturer but also a service provider for the transformer and electric rotating machine market.
As part of its commitment to innovation, Ganz launched a monitoring system for transformers under the Intelligent Solutions brand in 2022 which, once installed to new or older equipment, allows the status and operation of the equipment to be monitored. This increases the reliability and lifetime of transformers and avoids unnecessary maintenance. Due to its popularity, the monitoring system portfolio was made available for rotating machines in 2023, one year after its initial launch.
With maintenance and servicing becoming increasingly important in the energy sector, the company has recently started to look seriously at refurbishment as a separate business. Ganz's Service division carries out planned, corrective, preventive and condition-based maintenance in accordance with the IEC standard and its recommendations. In this respect, business and environmental interests go hand in hand, because a well-refurbished equipment will last for many years, resulting in lower costs and less impact on the environment.
In addition to developing sustainable products and services, Ganz is committed to transforming its own factories into modern, carbon-neutral working environments. In 2023-2024, the company launched a €12 million project focused on technology development in its Rotating Machines division, aimed at transforming the Hungarian factory into a modern manufacturing facility. As part of the investment the company will modernise its entire production process. This will include the installation of a new generation of production equipment which will enable Ganz to offer its customers custom-made products and tailor-made solutions with even greater efficiency than before.
In addition to this, Ganz has also developed a new test laboratory, which will enable much more accurate measurements, making it easier to meet customer needs in both the Transformer and Rotating Machines division. The laboratory was awarded MSZ EN ISO/IEC 17025:2018 certification at the end of 2023 valid for 5 years. Now the company not only can advance the maintenance of its own equipment but can also provide testing facilities for other companies.
A professional partner in modernising energy supply
In recent years, all four of Ganz divisions - Transformer, Rotating Machines, Service and Intelligent Solutions - have been able to significantly increase their sales in both domestic and international markets. The Rotating Machines division expected to double output as a result of new orders from international companies across wide range of sectors.
As a result, the long-established Hungarian manufacturer is able to actively contribute to the realisation of the green energy revolution not only in Hungary, but also abroad. Thanks to its strong export activities, the company’s products, transformers, motors and generators, are now used in most European countries, from Ireland to Romania, as well as in the Middle East and the Caucasus.
In recent years the Rotating Machines division supplied a number of electric motors and generators to its partners in the Middle East and the Caucasus. Ganz has manufactured enhanced safety and pressurised motors for the oil and gas industry, such as enhanced safety and non-sparking design of gas turbine starting asynchronous motors, and 4-5 MW pressurised design asynchronous motors for hazardous area operation.
The engineers of Ganz have a high level of knowledge and technical expertise that gives them a strong advantage in the race to win new business. Team members approach each job as a new professional challenge. This allows the company to build custom machines that other companies cannot and is the key to the competitiveness of the almost 150-year-old company.
