Over the past 20 years, Azerbaijan has experienced notable changes in its demographic development. AZERTAC has examined demographic trends observed during this period, particularly from the early 2000s to the present day, including support programs for the elderly population, the consequences of population aging, and distinguishing regional factors.

The total population of Azerbaijan continues to grow, while at the same time the number of elderly people and their life expectancy are also increasing. According to statistical data, over the past 20 years the share of people aged 65 and older has risen from about 6% to 9.9%.

The growing number of elderly people is making their knowledge and life experience more accessible to society.

In the early 2000s, the average life expectancy was around 72 years, while today it is approaching 76 years. Birth rates are higher in rural areas than in cities, reflecting strong family traditions in the countryside. In highly urbanized regions such as Absheron and Nakhchivan, birth rates are somewhat lower. The current average life expectancy has reached 75.9 years: 73.5 years for men and 78.6 years for women.

За последние 20 лет в Азербайджане произошли интересные изменения в демографическом развитии. АЗЕРТАДЖ исследовало  демографические тенденции, наблюдаемые за последние 20 лет, особенно с начала 2000-х годов по настоящее время, программы поддержки пожилого населения, последствия старения населения и отличительные факторы по регионам.

Общая численность населения Азербайджана продолжает расти, в то же время наблюдается увеличение числа пожилых людей и рост продолжительности их жизни.  Согласно статистическим показателям, за последние 20 лет доля людей старше 65 лет увеличилась примерно с 6% до 9,9%.

Рост численности пожилых людей делает их знания и жизненный опыт более доступными для общества. 

В начале 2000-х годов средняя продолжительность жизни составляла около 72 лет, а сегодня приближается к 76 годам. Рождаемость в сельской местности выше, чем в городах. Это свидетельствует о сильных семейных традициях в сельской местности. В регионах с высокой степенью урбанизации, таких как Апшерон и Нахчыван, рождаемость несколько ниже. Ожидаемая продолжительность жизни в настоящее время достигла в среднем 75,9 лет: 73,5 лет у мужчин и 78,6 лет у женщин.

Russia supports the initiative put forward by Chinese President Xi Jinping to create a more effective system of global governance, President of Russia Vladimir Putin said on Monday during a speech at the expanded SCO+ meeting in Tianjin.

According to Russian media, in his speech, V. Putin noted that "Russia supports President Xi Jinping's initiative and is interested in beginning concrete discussions on the proposals put forward by our Chinese friends."

The Russian leader recalled that since its establishment in 2001, the SCO "has been actively involved in efforts to foster an atmosphere of peace and security, trust, and cooperation across the common Eurasian continent."

"In this regard, we have, of course, listened carefully to everything proposed by Mr. Xi Jinping on the creation of a new, more effective and functional system of global governance," he assured.

Caspian Energy Club has presented the preliminary results of its annual global poll, conducted with over 3,700 entrepreneurs and business executives from 50 countries.  

The main objective of the poll is to assess the investment potential of over 200 regions and districts across eight countries along the Middle Corridor, identify the most promising investment opportunities, and provide an objective view of international business prospects in these areas.

For the past 20 years, the results of the annual poll have been provided to potential investors to guide their investment decisions. Starting this year, chief executives of regions and districts receiving the highest number of votes will be awarded the international Caspian Business Award.

Based on the poll results, the Autonomous Republic of Adjara has been recognized as one of the regions with the highest investment potential. The representative of the President of Azerbaijan on climate issues, Mukhtar Babayev, told Report about this at the closing of the UN Youth Local Conference on Climate Change (LCOY Azerbaijan 2025). According to him, the Caspian’s shallowing process is ongoing and is projected to deepen further.

“Due to the drop in water levels, the ports themselves are becoming shallower, causing problems with vessel reception and cargo unloading. In addition, the declining sea level negatively affects biodiversity, leads to the death of living organisms, and the formation of new islands. Oil and gas operations in the water area are also under threat,” he added.

He noted that over the past 20 years, approximately 7% of the world’s glaciers have melted.

“And this process continues. Particularly intensive melting is observed in the Greater Caucasus,” Babayev emphasized.

"Из-за снижения уровня воды мелееют и сами порты, возникают проблемы с приемом судов, выгрузкой грузов. Кроме того, снижение уровня моря оказывает негативное влияние на биоразнообразие, приводит к гибели живых организмов и образованию новых островов. Под угрозой оказываются и нефтегазовые операции в акватории", - добавил он.

По его словам, за последние 20 лет в мире растаяло около 7% ледников.

"И этот процесс продолжается. Особенно интенсивное таяние наблюдается на Большом Кавказе", - подчеркнул Бабаев.

Russia’s Gazprom and China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) have signed an agreement to increase annual natural gas supplies to China via the Power of Siberia-2 pipeline, as well as through the Russian Far East, Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported on Tuesday.

Specifically, the Russian company will transport up to 50 billion cubic meters of gas per year through the pipeline for a period of 30 years, RIA Novosti reports, citing Gazprom CEO Alexey Miller, who is in Beijing. According to Miller, the price of the fuel will be lower than what Gazprom currently charges consumers in Europe, Bloomberg reports.

According to the reports, the energy giant has also agreed to increase supplies to China via the existing Power of Siberia route by 6 billion cubic meters per year. The current annual capacity of the pipeline is 38 billion cubic meters.

According to reports, the volumes of supplies through the future Far Eastern gas pipeline with China, scheduled to start operations in 2027, will also exceed the initially planned 10 billion cubic meters per year. The length of the Power of Siberia-2 pipeline is expected to be 2,600 kilometers: it will start at the Yamal field and run to China via Mongolia. The pipeline’s planned supply capacity is approximately 50 billion cubic meters of gas per year.

After commissioning, Gazprom will be able to export 32.5 billion cubic meters of pipeline gas to China, originally intended for the EU and Türkiye, at contract prices.
